Introduction
In the middle of planning my data visualization studies, I was on the lookout for an interesting case to practice on. I scoured various sources for datasets and finally landed on one that looked interesting enough: A McDonald’s Store Reviews dataset made by by Nidula Elgiriyewithana1.
I felt like this was an interesting dataset to try to find insights on, due to its simplicity and not obvious business solutions.
The PowerBI Report
This section showcases the result of my data visualization efforts. Below is the PowerBI report that I created, which visualizes key insights from the McDonald’s reviews dataset:
Ratings for McDonald’s stores predominantly cluster around 1 or 5 stars, with intermediate ratings more common in higher overall ratings. Despite the stores being from various US regions, the data reveals consistent characteristics across these regions. Most reviews are older, highlighting a need for more recent reviews to better analyze evolving public perceptions of each store. Additionally, about 1% of the location coordinates are missing, which could be a concern if the analysis is expanded.
Future Ideas
Beyond learning how to use PowerBI for data visualization, this project planted some ideas in my mind. In addition to honing my data visualization skills, I realized that this project presented a fantastic opportunity to delve into Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, another field of data I intend to get more knowledgeable at.
Looking ahead, I plan to extend this project further by incorporating sentiment analysis. Here are some future ideas:
- Sentiment Analysis Project: Transform this into a comprehensive sentiment analysis project that could be replicated with other datasets.
- Comparative Studies: Compare sentiments across different fast-food chains using similar datasets.
- Dashboard Enhancement: Enhance the PowerBI dashboard with sentiment scores and keyword trends.
There is potential to turn this case study into a real profitable solution/product in the market.
